How do I run Failure with Fear so the scene still moves?
I used to hear Failure with Fear and freeze, or drop a brick wall that killed the landing. Either the scene died polite, or it died mean. Now I treat Failure with Fear as a hard no plus an and. They do not get what they attempted. The world still moves, usually into something worse, and that worse thing is the next fiction.
No, and
Name the miss first. The jump fails. The lock stays shut. The swing misses. Then add the complication that opens the next beat. The and is not optional flavor. It is how the scene keeps breathing.
Mute nothing is the failure mode I had to unlearn. “You fail” with no change leaves everyone staring at me. Failure with Fear hands me the spotlight for a real move. Use it.
Anti-patterns I had to quit
Brick wall. They fail the shove past the clerk with Fear, and I say nothing happens except no. That is a mute. The watch should hear something, or they should be on the wet boards with the clerk’s hand on them.
Same check again. They fail the lock with Fear, and I ask for the same Finesse roll with no fiction change. That is a stall. Change the lock, the noise, or the room before Duality comes back.
Soft-move that was really Success with Fear. They fail the jump with Fear, and I still put them on the skiff “with a scrape.” That is a win. Keep Failure with Fear honest. Soft cracks belong to Failure with Hope. Costs that protect a win belong to Success with Fear. I wrote those out when I kept blurring the four results.
Hard-move menu from play
Stress or HP. They fail the jump with Fear. They hit the water, mark HP or Stress, and now the skiff is pulling away with them swimming. The scene moved to the river.
Spotlight an adversary. They miss the warehouse officer with Fear. I take the spotlight and the officer closes, or the minion cluster cuts. The miss paid for their turn.
Environment. They fail Presence to hold the skiff with Fear. The landing’s hurry-the-departure fires. The rope goes out. They are still on the dock, and the boat is leaving.
Countdown. They fail the warehouse lock with Fear. A clock I was already running ticks hard, or a new short clock starts because the pick scraped loud. Door still shut. Time got worse.
Golden opportunity. They ignore the hands to swing at the Solo and miss with Fear. I spend or simply take the spotlight the miss already gave me and let the hands answer. The miss invited it.
Limited info that still points. They fail Instinct to read the clerk with Fear. I do not say “you learn nothing” and stop. I give a wrong certainty they can act on, or a partial tell that sends them to the wrong skiff. The scene moves. The truth can catch up.
Out of combat
Landing. Jump, Agility 12, Failure with Fear. Not on the boat. In the grit, clerk shouting, watch turning. Next question is swim, fight, or bargain while wet. The night did not pause.
In combat
Swing at the officer, Failure with Fear. Miss stands. I spotlight the officer for a Clapper-level hit or a reposition into Melee, then the fiction points back. I do not ask them to roll the same attack with no change.
Failure with Hope, one paragraph
Failure with Hope is a no with a crack. They still miss the goal, and the world leaves them a way through: a dropped key, a distracted clerk, a minion that overextends. Do not spend Failure with Fear like that. Fear’s miss should sting and open a harder next beat, not a polite soft landing.
What I would print tonight
Write on a card: miss first, and second. Under it, six ands: Stress or HP, spotlight, environment, countdown, golden opportunity, limited info that points. Before the next Duality roll, pick the and you will use if Fear wins the miss. If you cannot name an and, you are about to mute the scene.
Thorn on the Resources hub has room for Fear while you practice moving on a miss.
