How do Failure with Hope and Success with Hope feel different at the table?
How do Failure with Hope and Success with Hope feel different at the table?
Techniclee
I used to narrate every Hope result like a soft Fear result. Success came with a tax. Failure came with a brick wall that somehow still handed me the spotlight. The table stopped trusting which die had won. Now I keep the feel split. Success with Hope is a clean win the player can color. Failure with Hope is a miss that still leaves a door, and they gain Hope. Fear stays the louder currency.
Success with Hope
They get what they attempted. No Fear token for me. The world says yes, and the player gets to say how it looks. Spotlight stays soft with them unless the fiction naturally points elsewhere.
On the landing, someone asks the clerk a sharp question with Presence and succeeds with Hope. The clerk answers. The player describes leaning on the ledger like they own the dock. I do not add a shout, a Stress, or a second lock. Clean win.
In the warehouse, a swing hits with Hope. Damage stands. The player colors the hit. I do not soft-spotlight an interrupt for free. If I want the Solo to answer, I pay Fear later on a green light, not as a tax on their Hope success.
Failure with Hope
They do not get the goal. The world leaves a crack: a dropped key, a distracted hand, a minion that overextends, a wrong door that still leads somewhere. They gain Hope. I do not seize the spotlight for a full hard move the way Failure with Fear invites.
They fail the jump with Hope. Not on the skiff. A trailing rope is still in reach, or a dockhand looks away. They mark Hope. Next beat is climb or bargain, not watch boots as a Fear dump I did not earn from that roll.
They miss the officer with Hope. Miss stands. A hand slips and leaves an opening, or the officer’s attention ticks to the wrong PC. Hope goes up. The scene still moves without me spending the saucer.
Four-way pointer, short
Success with Fear: win stands, then a cost that does not erase it. Failure with Fear: miss stands, then a hard and that opens worse fiction. I wrote those when I was snatching wins and muting misses. This page is only the Hope pair. Do not rebuild those banks here.
| Result | Feel at my table |
|---|---|
| Success with Hope | Clean yes; player colors it |
| Failure with Hope | No goal; a door; Hope gain |
| Success with Fear | Yes; cost after; Fear for me |
| Failure with Fear | No; hard and; spotlight can move hard |
Anti-patterns
Success with Hope like Fear. Adding a shout, a Stress, or a second lock because you are used to taxing every roll. If you want that pressure, wait for Fear on the dice or spend Fear on a green interrupt. Do not launder it through Hope.
Failure with Hope like Fear. Brick wall, same check again, or a Relentless-sized spotlight steal with no door. That is Failure with Fear energy. Keep the crack. Hand them Hope. Let them choose the next beat.
What I would print tonight
Write two lines on a card. Hope success: yes, they color it, no tax. Hope failure: no, door, Hope up. Before you narrate, name which line you are on. If you are about to add a cost or a hard spotlight, check whether Fear actually won.
Free sheets on the Resources hub are there if you want Hope and Fear tracks visible while the table learns the difference.
