How do I write environment impulses I actually use?
I used to fill environment blocks with pretty impulses I never touched, like “ancient and watchful” or “full of secrets”. In the middle of a scene I would blank and fall back on adversary attacks. The rules describe impulses as the way an environment pushes and pulls the people in it. So I write them as pressure the place puts on the characters, in verb phrases I will act on, and I keep them to two to four so I can remember them when Fear lands.
Impulses are pressure
Each line should tell me what the place wants to do to the party, such as separate the scouts, waste the last light, tempt the wrong door or flood the lower stair. If I cannot picture a Fear spend or a feature that makes it happen, I rewrite the impulse.
Two to four, not a poem
Three is my sweet spot, and four if the place is the whole scene. Any more than that and I use none of them. I keep the list pinned beside the Fear counter on Foundry, not buried in a paragraph of lore.
Tie each one to a spend or a feature
The bridge on the way to the Collector in our Motherboard campaign had an impulse to grind the unwary between the gates. It was tied to a feature that forces a Reaction Roll when someone crosses and marks HP on a failure. Its other impulse was to collect the toll, which was tied to the spider remnant in the booth and to a Fear spend that brought fresh guards up on the far side. If an impulse has no hook, it is flavour, and flavour does not fire.
Before and after
The first impulses I wrote for the labyrinth under Thorpe were “ominous”, “labyrinthine” and “hungry”, and none of them fired.
The rewrite for the same place was “split the party at the junctions”, “eat their light” and “show them what the Collector left behind”. All three fired. The split cost Ratchett a Stress when Sam insisted he knew the way back. Eating the light landed when I spent a Fear and the tunnel lamps died, which left Tak with no shot. Showing them what the Collector left behind turned up a child’s wooden toy and a locket, and those two objects made the job personal.
Social environments need the same craft, and I wrote about running them in running a Social environment that isn’t just talking.
What I would do tonight
Write three verb phrases and circle the Fear spend or feature that serves each one. Drop anything you would be embarrassed to say out loud mid-fight. After the session, cut any impulse that never fired. The questions at the bottom of the block are the other half of the place, and I wrote about them in using environment feature questions as improv prompts.
There are free sheets on the Resources hub if you want a pad for the environment.
