How do I stop Hope and Fear from capping every session?

I stop Hope and Fear from capping by cutting empty Duality rolls and actually spending both pools in the first hour. Raising the caps is the wrong fix. The roll rate and the spend rate are the real dials.

I have run nights where Hope was at six by the first rest and Fear was at twelve before the warehouse door. Duality kept firing, and nobody wanted to spend anything because the pools were already full. The caps were not the bug.

Diagnose the flood

I look in three places.

The first is the roll rate. When every glance becomes an action roll, from coiling a rope to asking a friendly question to walking across open boards, Hope and Fear climb because Duality is doing overtime on sure things.

The second is my Fear spend rate. When I take tokens and bank them for “later”, later never comes. The saucer hits the ceiling while the landing stays polite.

The third is rests. Short and long rests hand me more Fear while the party clears Stress and gathers Hope. If the next scene is soft, my pool only grows.

When all three stack, the session feels capped even though the rules are working.

Fewer action rolls

I fixed the loudest leak first. If there is no real chance of failure, if both outcomes are not interesting, or if the table does not want the dice, the character just does it. I wrote that gate out back when I was still rolling for the time the skiff left. Cut the ceremonies, and Hope and Fear stop climbing for free.

Spend Fear in fiction before the ceiling

A full saucer that never interrupts is wasted tension. I spend on telegraphing danger, on environment features, on adversary features that fit the fiction, and on golden-opportunity interrupts while the scene still has a job. I match the spend to the size of the scene instead of hoarding for a climax that arrives empty. I have already written about the spend dial and about spending Fear with the table rather than against it, from the nights when I was dumping early or freezing late. Do not wait until you have twelve to feel allowed.

Challenges that need Hope without becoming mean

Hope caps when nobody spends it. Experiences, helping an ally, Hope features and Tag Team rolls exist so the pool moves down. I put pressure on the fiction that makes those spends attractive: a Difficulty that wants an Experience, an ally who needs help, or a feature that is clearly the right tool for the door in front of them.

That does not mean taxing every roll with Stress until the players are miserable. It means offering a problem where spending Hope is the smart play. If I only create problems that Duality can solve alone, Hope sits at six and the features rot.

Capped versus a healthy ebb

Healthy nights breathe. Hope goes up on Duality and down on spends. Fear goes up on Duality and rests, and down when I interrupt, take the spotlight or fire a feature. You should see both pools move in both directions in the first hour.

A capped night is flat lines at the top. The players stop looking at their Experiences and I stop looking at the saucer. The warehouse fight might still have the right Battle Points, but the currency that makes Duality loud is already dead.

One night at twelve Fear

It was a one-shot in my kitchen, before our Motherboard campaign started, with four players from what became the campaign table. I started with 4 Fear. I rolled too much on the landing and spent too little, and by the warehouse door I was at 12 with a Solo still ahead. I forced a hard reset in the fiction. I spent hard on Relentless and on environment features until the pool mattered again, and I stopped calling for Duality rolls on dock chatter. The boss finally felt expensive. The real lesson came earlier in the night, though. Do not arrive at twelve with the climax still ahead of you. Spend through the middle, or cut the rolls that filled you up.

The Thorn sheet on the Resources hub has room to track Hope and Fear while you watch those lines move. If Stress pressure is part of your fix, the Veil sheet is there too.
