How to run Daggerheart environments at the table
An environment is not a map with HP. It is a stat block for the place, and it has impulses, a Difficulty, and features you can fire like adversary moves. If you run the landing as a pretty description and then forget the block, you are leaving Fear on the table.
Put the block where you can see it
Name, tier, type, one line of description, impulses, Difficulty, potential adversaries, then features. Types are Exploration, Social, Traversal, or Event. The place has no Hit Points and no Stress of its own. Difficulty is what they roll against when they are opposing the place, not a person.
Here is a Traversal I actually keep on a card.
LOW TIDE FERRY Tier 1 Traversal The landing wants you gone before the water turns. Impulses: hurry the departure, isolate stragglers, hide the copper smell Difficulty: 12 Potential Adversaries: watch officers, warehouse hands
Features sit under that. Passive is always true. Action is a move you make when you spotlight the place. Reaction fires when they do the thing that triggers it. A Fear Feature costs Fear on top of whatever you already spent to interrupt.
Shift the environment on purpose
One of your GM moves is shift the environment. That is not flavour. That is the tide going out, the rope slipping, the clerk closing the ledger. Spend Fear if the feature says so.
Read this aloud.
The river drops a handspan while you are still arguing. The skiff’s hull kisses mud, and the gangplank is suddenly a climb.
That is the place taking a turn. Then you look at the impulses, because they tell you what the landing wants: hurry, isolate, hide.
Do not fight the place as if it were a Solo
They do not deal thresholds to the ferry. They roll against 12 to get the rope, or to read the clerk, or to notice the copper. If you need a body, that is a potential adversary, spotlighted separately, and extra bodies cost extra Fear.
What I would print tonight
Write one environment for the first scene: four impulses, one Difficulty, one Fear Feature. Put it next to your Fear tokens. When they look at you, fire the place before you fire a person.
