How long does a Daggerheart one-shot actually run?

How long does a Daggerheart one-shot actually run?

Techniclee

I book slots against marketing vibes and then the festival eats the thief. This is the lived clock, not the shop blurb. If you are holding a room for two, three, or four hours, these are the nights I actually timed with my hands on Duality.

Nights I can put a number on

Night Wall-clock Players Chargen at table
The Wish Thief ~3 hours (tight) table with pregens No (9 pregens)
300 Zombies Walk Into A Bar 3–4 hours (in the printed window) 3–5 No (level band as written)
The Quest for the Crimson Lady 2–3 hours 5 No (Tier 1 preamble)
Goat Herders Wanted 3–4 hours 3–5 No (Tier 2 band)
Ferry landing slice (my own open) under 2 hours to the skiff job 4 No (pregens / existing sheets)
Sablewood Messengers a full first sit, no printed hour target 2–5 No (5 Level 1 pregens)

Phantom Peak, Vaultbreakers, and Dying Spire gave me a night each. I am not putting fake minutes on them. Wish Thief is the clearest “three hours or the carnival wins” lesson I have.

What burns time in Daggerheart

Spotlight teaching. First Duality night needs the four results once in fiction. If you lecture before the first roll, you pay twice.

Fear economy. A full saucer that never spends still costs talk time while you decide whether to interrupt. Underspend makes soft scenes drift. Overspend makes fights long because Relentless and environment features keep buying turns.

Long rests. A long rest mid-one-shot is a several-hour fiction skip plus a Fear dump. In a three-hour slot it is often the wrong menu.

Social drift. Collaborative worldbuilding and festival games are fun and expensive. Wish Thief taught me that. If the printed night has a chase and a fight, the carnival will eat them unless you cut.

Targets: 2h / 3h / 4h

Two hours. One cold open, one environment, one fight or one hard social, no long rest, pregens only. My landing-to-skiff slice lives here. Crimson Lady’s printed 2–3 band is the closest published fit when the table already knows the frame.

Three hours. Wish Thief with the festival compressed. In medias res lockdown, chase, confrontation. One short rest max if Stress or armor actually needs the menu. Pregens.

Four hours. Zombies or Goat Herders in their printed window, or Wish Thief with more social breath and still a cut list. Room for one short rest and a second fight. Still no shopping act.

Starting in medias res is how I protect all three targets. I wrote that opener craft separately when the tavern walk was stealing Act One.

Pregen versus make-at-table

Every timed night above used pregens or existing sheets. I have not measured a full make-at-table one-shot in this pile because I stopped offering it for three-hour books. When I have let people build, the first Duality slips past the forty-minute mark and the climax compresses. For a booked slot, pregens are the time cost I am willing to pay: zero chargen minutes, full adventure minutes.

Ran long, ran short

Ran long: Wish Thief when I let festival games breathe. Three hours of carnival and we were late to the thief. Fix: open in lockdown, cut contests that do not name the thief, Duality on the chase not on the cake.

Ran short: Crimson Lady in the two-hour end of its band when the table already wanted Witherwild and treated it as a preamble. Fix if you need a fuller night: do not skip the harvest pressure, or pair it with a cold open that spends Fear early so the flower job has weight. Do not pad with shopping.

What I would print tonight

Circle your room length. Write the cut list before players sit: what you will not run if Duality is slow. Put pregens on the table. Start the camera in the problem. If the slot is three hours and the PDF loves a festival, cut the festival first.

The free sheets on the Resources hub are there if the night dumps into a fight or a rest and you want paper ready.
