When to use a Tag Team Roll in Daggerheart

Help is cheap. Tag Team is not. I used to let people Help when they really wanted to do the thing together, and then the 3 Hope never got spent. The night got flatter. If you can hear the difference, you can call it.

Help is one Hope and a die

When somebody is doing the roll, and you are backing them, that is Help an Ally. You spend 1 Hope, you roll a d6, and they keep the highest advantage die if more than one person helps. You are not rolling Duality. You are not splitting the spotlight into two action rolls. You are a shoulder.

The skiff again. One of them grabs the rope. Another braces the rail. That is Help.

Tag Team is both of you doing it

Once per session, the person who starts it spends 3 Hope. Both of you roll Duality. You pick one result, and that result counts for both of you. If it comes up Hope, everyone involved gains Hope. If it comes up Fear, I gain a Fear for each PC in the roll. If it is a successful attack, you add both damage rolls as one source.

That is expensive on purpose. Use it when the fiction is two people on the same desperate beat, not when one of them is holding a lantern.

Read this aloud.

The watch officer is already on the gangplank, and the rope is the only thing still tying the skiff to the landing. You both have your hands on it. What do you do together?

If they say they haul as one, that is Tag Team. If they say one hauls and one threatens the officer, that is two beats, and maybe Help.

Do not spend it on the first polite roll

Group actions exist too: one leader rolls the action, the rest roll reactions, and the leader gets plus one or minus one per result. Reactions do not make Hope or Fear. That is how a whole table shoves a crate.

Tag Team is the once-a-night swing. Name it when they grin at each other. Let Help do the rest.

What I would print tonight

Write one line under your first scene: Help, group action, or Tag Team. If it is Tag Team, write the 3 Hope cost where you can see it, because you will forget, and they will too.
