Muck Mire

Slime Marsh

The Sovereign holds the deep pool, the Lurker lashes from scum, and the Leaper vaults the peat.

Muck Mire spreads across a sunken depression where rotten marsh gas bubbles through green slime. Black peat pools lie hidden beneath mats of floating scum, waiting to swallow heavy travelers. The air smells of sulfur and stagnant pond silt, buzzing with blood gnats.

Three gelatinous predators claim the slime pools. The Ooze Sovereign squats in the deep central basin, watching every approach through twelve thrashing eyestalks. Concealed beneath floating scum, the Stalk Lurker projects slender eye periscopes, waiting for travelers to step into soft mud. Prowling the perimeter, the Bile Leaper compresses its rubbery body, vaulting across mud bogs to body-slam unwary climbers.

The pack hunts by driving travelers into deep slime pits where armor drags victims under. The Bile Leaper bounds forward first, slamming into front-line shields and coating footing in slick bile. The Stalk Lurker waits hidden in the muck, lashing out with acidic tendrils to dissolve boots and drag fighters down.

When prey thrashes or sinks, the Ooze Sovereign surges forward. Its writhing eyestalks emit disorienting psychic pulses while its massive green bulk rolls over pinned foes. The blobs do not pursue quarry onto dry granite ledges. They hold the slime basin and let toxic muck exhaust their prey.

Example encounter

1. Put the Bile Leaper on the peat rim, the Stalk Lurker Hidden under floating scum, and the Ooze Sovereign in the deep central basin.

2. On the Leaper's first spotlight, use Bile Vault to close from Far into Melee and attack with Heavy Bile-Slam.

3. If the target fails the Agility Reaction Roll (15), they are prone and Vulnerable until they stand.

4. Spotlight the Stalk Lurker from Hidden. Use Muck Tendril on that Vulnerable target so Caustic Dissolution adds 1d8 magic.

5. If an ally tries to pull a friend from the muck, spend a Fear on the Sovereign's Slime Engulf, or use Acidic Lash if they are already Restrained.

6. Mark a Stress on Eyestalk Gaze when rescuers cluster in Close. Failed Presence Reaction Rolls (15) mark 1 Stress and leave them Vulnerable.

7. Keep the pack in the slime basin. Do not chase onto dry granite ledges.
